Freedom Sonata World Premiere @ Festival de Marseille / La Criée, Marseille (FR)

Cosmopolitan, Mediterranean and radiant, Marseille has inspired Emanuel Gat to create a choreographic, musical, and dramatic sonata in three movements, unfolding in a theatrical space with changing effects, from black to white... An imaginary journey bathed in light in counterpoint to music and dance.

For his first piece in Marseille, Emanuel Gat invites his regular dancers and newcomers to celebrate 30 years of choreography and musical exploration in an ode to the city he calls home. A fictional, sensitive portrait bathed in the light of the Mediterranean, the show is a free contemporary interpretation of the classical musical form of the sonata. His first solo Four Dances, performed in Tel Aviv in 1994, was accompanied by Bach's music; today, two major works and different musical sources punctuate his new opus: the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 32 performed by Mitsuko Ushida, who senses its proximity to jazz, and the complete album The Life of Pablo by musician, producer, and rapper Kanye West! All this results in a choreography that is always spectacular and vibrant, carried along by Gat’s signature sculptural compositions. Its constant ebb and flow and exquisite beauty echo the life, landscapes and movements of Marseille, an endless source of inspiration, pointing to a way of living together, a special human alchemy transcended by dance and music. The relationships between the individual and the collective and the erosion of the notion of freedom are at the heart of this new opus.
