SACRE/GOLD @ Trafo, Budapest (HUN)

Fluid, inner logic, delicate beauty.

Kill two birds with one stone, as one of the greatest choreographers of our time presents updated versions of two of his major pieces.

Revisiting ‘The Rite of Spring’, a major piece of the Gat-repertoire (created in 2004), ‘SACRE’ whips audiences into a fever through its incendiary juxtaposition of Stravinsky and Cuban salsa. Through a combination of elegance and bursts of feverish movement, the piece renews ‘The Rite of Spring’ in all the splendor of its modernity. ‘SACRE’ received a Bessy award in 2006 for its performances at the Lincoln Center Festival in New York.

‘GOLD’ is an adaptation of 2013’s ‘The Goldlandbergs’, a piece based on two major works by Glenn Gould: his legendary interpretations of Bach's ‘Goldberg Variations’, and ‘The Quiet in the Land’, a poetic radio documentary. ‘GOLD’ reflects the intense resonance between music and dance, and explores the nature of deeply human relationships.

SUNNY @ Dublin Dance Festival (IR)

Irish Premiere. Presented in association with the Abbey Theatre.

Experience a joyful collision of music and movement! Merging a live concert with vibrant dance, Sunny is an explosion of ideas, new sounds and exuberant energy. Created by acclaimed choreographer, Emanuel Gat, and singer/performer, Awir Leon, this uplifting piece is a blast of pleasures, rich in changing moods and colours.

The movement evolves from the playful and sensual interactions of ten dancers. They respond to each other and to the soundtrack, which unfolds from Marvin Gaye’s song 'Sunny' and is performed live on stage by Leon, a shooting star of the Electronic Music scene. Gat masterfully intertwines the dancers’ individual phrases in a flowing free-form, moving them across the stage as if in chain reactions.

Emanuel Gat established his Bessie Award-winning company in 2004. He regularly creates choreographies for leading international dance companies including The Paris Opera Ballet and L.A. Dance Project.

GOLD @ KunstFestSpiele, Hannover (DE)

Israeli choreographer Emanuel Gat and his ensemble visit the Orangerie Herrenhausen on 20 May with Gat's piece "Gold".

Emanuel Gat's choreography "Gold" is primarily an investigation of the delicate and significant realm between the audible and the visible, the acoustic and the kinetic, the verbal and the sensory, which determines the complex nature of human relationships. As his starting point Gat took Canadian pianist Glenn Gould's famous recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations dating from 1981, and combined it with the pianist's 1977 radio piece "The Quiet in the Land".

Discussion with the artist on May 18th

"Sunny, yesterday my heart was filled with rain. Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain." Bobby Hebb's song, which has been covered many times, provided the title to the new work by the Israeli choreographer, who now lives in southern France. The musician Awir Leon, who used to be a dancer in Gat's company that was founded in 2004, served him as a starting point and focus for the composition. Together the choreographer and musician have created an evening that combines a live concert and dance in a special way. A "choreographic miracle," wrote a French critic, rich in ideas and beauty. Awir Leon performs the music live. Gat gives his dancers free rein. He is also interested in self-controlled systems in his work with his company. Polyphonic structures evolve, as well as fragile sequences of motion, which are sketched and then discarded again. A polar bear enters. Pairs negotiate proximity and distance. The relationships between the dancers are the focal point in this furious and virtuosic evening, which ends with a guitar version of SUNNY.

SACRE/GOLD @ Arsenal, Metz (FR)

Masterclass @ Henny Juries Foundation, Amsterdam

The Henny Jurriëns Foundation (HJS) was established in 1995 in order to provide open training for professional-level dancers. The namesake of the foundation, the late Henny Jurriëns, was one of The Netherlands best known and loved dancers.

The Foundation offers both classical ballet and modern dance classes throughout the year, as well as periodic workshops concentrating on specific styles of dance or dance-related bodywork. HJS is not a school or an academy, nor is it associated with a specific company.
HJS plays a central role in the freelance professional dance community in Amsterdam and strives to serve it by providing a regular program of classes which stimulate, challenge and maintain the technical level of the dancers. The studio serves also as a networking and information center where audition, performance, workshop and housing notices are posted regularly.

Pre-registration is required for all workshops and a selection is made on the basis of the participants CV's. Workshops are held at various locations. Please see the workshops section of the website for specific information and locations.
