Tous ceux qui connaissent le travail du chorégraphe Emanuel Gat savent déjà que son travail se nourrit des spécificités de ses danseurs et de leurs interactions lorsqu’ils improvisent en répétitions. Cette pièce chorégraphique délicieuse ne dément pas son talent de « chorégraphe de la collectivité » mais donne à voir également des solos, duos ou trios de belle facture.

Emanuel Gat is one of the Israeli choreographers living and working abroad that were invited to perform as part of Suzanne Dellal’s 30th year celebrations. Gat, 50, like some of his peers found abroad accessible recognition and support. The evening included two creations and opened with WORKS, an assemblage of components from recent works that sum up to a large degree his approach to his ongoing dance investigation.

Créée à Montpellier Danse il y a deux ans, Works avait alors un autre aspect. Appelée TENWORKS (for Jean-Paul), hommage d'Emanuel Gat au directeur du festival, elle réunissait des artistes du chorégraphe et du Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon pour un plateau fourni d'une vingtaine d'interprètes. La pièce a depuis pris son indépendance, s'est resserré en nombre de danseurs et danseuses (neuf sur scène quand nous l'avons vue pour cette chronique), est partie en tournée à travers le monde. Mais le principe est resté le même : une danse virtuose et complexe, comme une tornade, où la créativité d'Emanuel Gat se mêle à celles de ses interprètes. Et c'est à eux, profondément, que l'oeuvre rend hommage. "Works célèbre les danseurs et danseuses. Leur unicité, leur virtuosité, leur engagement, leur audace, leur sens des responsabilités et leur humanité", selon les mots du chorégraphe.
